At SSKD, we have a good choice of bespoke and made-to-order options.
What are the benefits of bespoke or made-to-order worktops?
Pros: Having your worktops cut and edged or having drainer grooves and sink holes, etc., already done can be a bonus to the fitter. This option is also great for any DIY enthusiasts. The fitter would place the worktops where they need to go and finish the job.
Cons: Once the worktops have been made to size, it is important to remember that they have been made just for you. Therefore, all measurements must be double-checked. Mistakes cost money.
Before looking into this further, we must establish what type of worktops you require.
The made-to-order option is available for solid surface, compact laminate, and standard laminate worktops, but each has a different process and timescale.
Solid surface materials, like Quartz or porcelain, can only be purchased as Bespoke or made-to-order.
This is because the material is produced in big slabs and then needs to be cut to the size of the worktops. For a full kitchen, the template and fit service is normally involved. This service includes templating. Although it seems complicated, having worktops made to order is relatively easy, with instructions every step of the way.
Template and fit are completed in stages.
- Send us a drawing via email for a quote. Include your preferred decor and delivery area.
- Templating: This is where a fitter would visit and take accurate measurements. It can only be done once your old worktops have been removed or new carcasses have been installed.
- Changes may have been suggested during the templating visit. If this is the case, you would again need to check the drawings sent to you and then agree to proceed.
- The fitting and delivery of the worktops or any additional items are usually a week or two after the template visit.
- In total, the whole procedure can take four weeks.
Made-to-order laminate worktops

TopShape and Spectra laminate worktops are covered top and bottom; this makes them unique to other laminate worktops on the market.
You may require a standard worktop and a curved-edge breakfast bar. No problem… this is where the made-to-order option in these brands is a bonus. With a two-week lead time, once delivered, your fitter would only need to make the additional sink/hob cutouts, etc.
Made-to-order or cut-to-size worktops can also be added for a small charge to any standard Formica worktop or De Terra solid wood. The worktop cut-to-order service includes the following:
Cut to size—radius corners, radius ends, edging strip application, Irregular Tapered cut, Mason's mitre joint, hob cut out, sink cut out, tap hole.
For the Aria solid laminate worktops, under-mount sink cutouts, drainer grooves, and edge finish can also be added.
As with the bespoke Solid surface procedure, checks must be completed before the worktops are made. Measurements of the area and any drawings will need to be double-checked by the purchaser before production.
